Sand Mold Workshop
Led by Kristy Summers, Professor of Sculpture UI-Carbondale, USA

Workshop will focus on sand molding processes including cement and resin bonded mold-making. Fifteen participants are invited to learn the process and prepare work to cast at the Pedvale Open-Air Art Museum at the Demonstration Pour scheduled on Sunday, June 22nd.

Workshop description
Workshop participants can bring pre-made patterns or make patterns on site for the creation of bonded sand molds. Pattern materials that can be used include but are not limited to, wood, cardboard, wax, foam, clay, and found objects. Molding materials, flaskwood and small hardware will be provided. There is access to a sand mixer, drills, grinders, and saws to assist in the creation of patterns and molds.

Weight/size guidelines: 100 kg (200 lb) sand/ 25 kg (50 lb) iron

Additional info
Please plan on bringing your own personal safety gear. Basic tools will be available. Workshop participants may wish to bring personal hand tools and any specialized tools needed should be brought to the site. Workshop participants are expected to participate in the preparation of materials and the handling and pouring of molds during the demonstration pour as their previous metal-casting experience allows. (Note: we do not recommend bringing your own electric tools unless they are rated for use in Latvia.)

Kristy Summers is a Professor of Sculpture at the University of Illinois, Carbondale in the United States where she teaches the aesthetic possibilities and processes of iron casting.

Suggested arrival: Thursday, June 12th to settle in and get acquainted with Pedvale Open-Air Art Museum.
